FAETH THERAPEUTICS MVP DESIGN

Background

Faeth Therapeutics is a healthcare startup in stealth mode aiming to revolutionize the treatment of cancer by combining medication with targeted diets and drugs.

People Problem

“As a cancer patient, I find it hard to keep up with the diet as part of the treatment.”

Opportunity

Food delivery to the patients’ homes as part of the cancer treatment.

My role

I was the lead designer for this two-month project. I collaborated with the CEO, CPO, and CTO to create an MVP. I started by creating a design language system, followed by designing the web app for the caregivers and the mobile app for the patients.

Solution

I started by creating a DLS to make sure there was visual consistency across the design. Then designed the caregiver persona prototype, a web app with the primary function of collecting the patient's data as well as being able to easily contact them by chat. Lastly, I created the patient persona prototype, a mobile app with a chat as them main feature to have direct contact with the assigned caregiver(s).

Mission

Faeth Therapeutics is a pharmaceutical company with the mission of making it easier for a cancer patient to follow a specific diet, providing guidance and education throughout the treatment.

MEdical Research

Each tumor has its own biochemistry. The usage of targeted diets and drugs tailored against the biochemistry of each tumor creates a hostile environment for the tumor. This hostile environment starves the cancer cells and increases the success rates of traditional cancer therapy.

The ketogenic diet is an example of a targeted diet aiming to starve certain tumors. In previous studies, this diet has proven to be a great coadjuvant (helper) in the treatment of certain tumors. Amino acid depleted diets also hold much promise in this regard.

Caregiver Persona

Goals

  • Support the patient at all times.

  • Have a close relationship with the patient(s).

  • Inform/educate the patient(s) on cancer treatment.

Pain Points

  • It is harder to create a close relationship online rather than in person.

  • Managing a big number of patients.

  • Not knowing what information other caregivers are giving.

Needs

  • Communicate fast and easy.

  • Track meals.

  • Easy access to patient’s history.

patient persona

Goals

  • Fight cancer.

  • Not have additional stress from treatment.

  • Follow diet as part of the treatment.

Pain Points

  • It is not convenient to follow the diet.

  • Don’t know what to buy in the supermarket.

  • Not enough support to deal with diet as part of the treatment.

Needs

  • Feel comfortable with the caregiver.

  • Have full support from the caregiver.

  • Easy way of scheduling meals.

Product Concepts

User: There are 2 types of users, patients and caregivers. Patients will only be able to access the mobile apps while caregivers will only be able to access the web app.

Team: A collection of users. A team will be constituted with 1 patient and 1 or more caregivers.

Message: A text or image message exchanged between patient and caregivers. This message is visible to all the team.

Chat History: All messages shared across the team sorted by chronological order.

Patient Profile: The beginnings of a medical record. For now we’ll store relevant patient information (name, phone, email, address, delivery information) as well as a history of patient notes written by caregivers.

Brand Guidelines

I reviewed the existing brand guidelines to understand the basic visual brand direction intended.

Sketching

Once I understood all the information about Faeth and reviewed the required features, I envisioned the solution by sketching.

I started with the Web App for the admin interface, since it was the most complex one. I decided on the information architecture and navigation first and then expanded to the rest of the features. I continued with the caregiver interface and finalized with the Mobile App.

When I felt comfortable with my initial sketches and knew what components where needed, I decided to create a Design Language System.

DESIGN LANGUAGE SYSTEM

Before designing the final prototype, I created a Design Language System taking into consideration the brand guidelines that I was given. Here is a sample of the components created:

When the DLS was finalized, I designed the first iteration of prototypes. After going through a couple of iterations incorporating the team’s feedback, we came up with the final MVP solution.

WEB APP MVP(Caregiver)

Main features (admin): adding and editing a team, adding a new user, active/deactivate users and activate admin rights.

Main features (caregiver): patient profile and chat interface.

Final Prototype

Mobile APP MVP(Patient)

Main features: user profile and chat interface.
