MEDICAL PRACTICE MANAGER
Background
Remedly is a cloud-based, data-centric enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for physicians and their patients. Remedly provides medical practices with an integrated EHR / Practice management / Marketing / Analytics system and their patients with a patent-pending online concierge service.
Goal
Update current user experience for the Electronic Health Records as well as the Visual Design Language.
Opportunity
Increase the number of users better understanding how to navigate through the EHR.
My role
This was a 5-month project. I was the only designer and was in charge of redesigning the product user experience as well as the visual design language. I collaborated with the entire team; from gathering insights from the CS team to delivering interactive prototypes to the engineering team.
Solution
From the User Research, I found what was working for current users and what was missing in the Electronic Health Records, and I came up with a redesign that was similar enough to the existing product for the current users to identify it, but different enough that their experience improved.
DESIGN PROCESS
CURRENT PRODUCT
I took the time to understand the current product, the different problems we were trying to solve, the goals we were trying to meet and how well were we accomplishing them.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
I did some research on the different features that our competitors were offering and talked to some users that were using them and found out what was working for them and what was missing.
USERS AND ADVISORS
I talked to users and advisors about our current product. And found out the problems that they were having, if they used all the features, what was working for them and what wasn’t.
PERSONAS
I talked to users and advisors about our current product. And found out the problems that they were having, if they used all the features, what was working for them and what wasn’t.
BRAINSTORMING AND SKETCHING
Since updating the design for the Electronic Health Records was a very big project, I decided to concentrate on different parts at a time but always making sure that it was coherent as a whole.
I started with the main screen and from there I moved on to the different sections.
For each section, I brainstormed different ideas. If I ever got stuck I will ask more questions to the Customer Success team to get more feedback, the CTO to see if the idea was feasible, and/or the CEO to get different ideas on how to solve the problem.
After brainstorming, I proceed to sketch and then create low-fidelity wireframes. I received feedback from customers and potential users and iterated fast and frequently throughout the process.
After validating my ideas with my team and a few users, I designed the final prototype.
MAIN SCREEN
I simplified the main screen, from two screens to one. I also created a new Visual Design Language that was more consistent throughout the application.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Since Remedly is a small startup, there was limited time to go through the steps of the process. I would’ve liked to have more time to talk to advisors and users.
Remedly didn’t have a process in place when I first came in, and it was challenging convincing the team that taking more time understanding the product and doing user research leads to a better design.
I had to create the Visual Design Language on the spot with no time to categorize the different elements. If the time were given to me, I would have started with the VDL so it would have been easier to design high-fidelity wireframes.
When I came into the project, there were created personas. I would have liked to have the time to review them and update them.
Overall it was a great experience to involve all the team and make them feel like they were part of the redesign too.
